Walking Difficulty Ratings
Assessing and determining the difficulty rating for any walking route is a very subjective task, as one person’s perception of an easy walk may be considered by another as a difficult walk. In order to reduce ambiguity and misunderstandings, and to provide a more objective method of rating the difficulty of each walk, I have used the Walk Difficulty Measurement Standards rating of the American Volkssport Association (AVA).
The AVA adopts a walk difficulty rating system which contains a numeric indicator for incline and an alpha indicator for terrain as follows:
